Film Night
Mon, 20.09.10 TBC
Where?
Please email Anuradha for details.
Our monthly Film Night has become one of BWN’s most popular evening activities.
By vote, we select an English language movie that shows as “original version” (i.e. that has not been dubbed into Spanish) at an easy-to-reach Barcelona theatre.
We typically shoot for an early evening start time, meeting c. 19:30-19:45 at the theatre so that everybody can individually buy her ticket before the show starts. Often, many of us join up for a drink or dinner afterwards. And the popcorn & shake during the movie are anyway optional!
Cost
Pay-your-own-ticket.

What You Can Do With Aubergines and Peppers
Wednesday, April 09, 2008Escalivada. Mmmm. You absolutely can’t beat it - Mediterranean, healthy, fat-free, delicious, and perfect for preparing in advance. You can serve it as a salad or sidedish, warm or cold. A lot of recipes mention onions and tomatoes, but I just do it with aubergines and red peppers.

Saturday, April 05, 2008Being devoted to research, the BWN Blog sat on a bench in Pla?a Catalunya to observe and take notes instead of rushing through or avoiding it altogether. But I still can?t muster much enthusiasm for it. It?s shapeless, messy, noisy, stressful, undistinguished, forgettable, horribly crowded, pigeon-infested and more a bus terminus now than anything else - oh, and a hotbed of pickpocketry.

What Makes Catalunya Tick: The Dance
Tuesday, March 11, 2008There’s a popular show on TV3 called Ca?adors de paraules - word hunters - presented by the inimitable chat show guy Roger de Gr?cia (yes - I wondered too - but this is his real name, not a stage name, as his bio at the TV3 website assures us). It looked fun from the trailers but I never got round to seeing it until I got hooked on the drama series Zoo. Programmes on TV3 never start on time, so I got to see Ca?adors while waiting for Zoo to start. Basically Roger de G goes wandering around the terres catalanes chatting to people and doing activities with them and eliciting local and dialect words. And yes, it’s great fun, but breathless MTV style editing means you can barely take anything in. At least the words Roger has hunted down are flashed on the screen for a nanosecond or two.

Saturday, February 23, 2008Catalunya is such a bizarre place. So dynamic, innovative, the economic engine of Spain, the only place where Spain really had an industrial revolution. And yet so clinging to its traditions. There were several things in my post about the cal?otada that I didn’t explain or translate. That was deliberate: I’m going to be blogging about them as the weeks go by - those things that make Catalunya tick. The barretina, for example.
