Between a Drought and a Wet Place
Hi from Manchester, where I?m visiting my mum. It?s been raining endlessly and as you probably know, many areas of the UK have been seriously flooded, including parts of Summerseat, the village where my parents used to live. It?s difficult not to feel homesick for Barcelona, even though that lovely springlike warmth that everyone was enjoying when I flew out is really a source of concern: climate change, depleted reservoirs, drought.
The bottom-line thing that I hugely miss about Barcelona is how lively the city is with shops and cafes open till late in the evening. Here everything closes down just as my Spanish biorrhythms are recovering from post-lunch torpor and I?m ready to browse after a sedentary day.
The Pyrenees were snowcapped when we flew over ? a gorgeous sight. I remembered the legend about how they were formed which I discovered when I was researching the origin of the name Pirineo. In fact there are several versions: the most heart-rending is the one given at the website of the Aragonese tourist office. Pyrene (pyros is the Greek word for fire) was a nymph, a girlfriend of Heracles. Heracles came to Iberia to steal the oxen of Geryon, a monstrous giant who had tried to rape Pyrene. But she fled and hid in an area between Spain and France. Geryon then burned the entire area in order to find her. Pyrene shrieked and cried in despair and her tears created the mountain lakes. Heracles heard her and came to her rescue. When he found her, she was close to death, with just enough time to tell him what had happened. Heracles, deeply moved by her tragic end, erected a mausoleum over her body by piling up all the stones and rocks he could find, thus creating a great mountain range he called the Pyrenees in her memory.

I like this description. I have to move back to London next year and the thought of flying out of Barcelona over the Pyrenees for what will certainly feel like the last time (even though I know we’ll be back) fills me with dread. What I love about flying to BCN from London is that magical moment when you fly down over the Pyrenees and then take a sharp right towards the sea and BCN. Then I feel I’m nearly home.
